SYNOPSIS
Shenanigan’s is a play based in a small village in rural Ireland, where the local Public House is a resting place for men and women from the surrounding communities, and the local barman is considered a sort of modern day Ganesha, a knower of all that is important to the lost soul, and a lover of every man and woman that is willing to spend their well-earned wages on a pint of Stout. The play explores the important subjects of land ownership and family traditions through the personal struggles of two brothers who are complete polar opposites to each other. It also employs the central location of the Irish Public House, a life-giving artery to so many rural and farming communities in Ireland.
The whole play takes place within the setting of an old style Irish Bar, with events from the past being communicated as reminiscence. It centers around the emotional and mental exchanges between two brothers, and their struggle for dominance and love from their now deceased Father. It also involves Colum, the owner of the local Bar, a man filled with false wisdom and honest contradiction, and Nuala the central female figure in all their lives, and the only woman in Donegal to have the courage to work in such a place.
Shenanigan’s is a play filled with the Irish spirit, both in its content and its characters. It gives an insight into the day-to-day happening of life in rural Ireland, where fact is much stranger than fiction and your best friend can sometimes become your worst enemy in the blink of an eye.
